It’s a beautiful looking movie, and that opening is still a stunning work of art. But once it cuts to four people in a bar—one of whom is a teenage girl, then it becomes very uncomfortable to watch, for the most part. Even back in the early 90s, when teenage me first saw it, I was creeped out by the relationship. Notice how Allen always implies that the girl is the one wanting the relationship to go on…like he’s the one being led on. The scene of him kissing her in the horse drawn carriage has lost any romantic sheen—it’s just gross. Yes, you can separate art from artist. But in Allen’s case, and when the artist has his personal coils so tight around the art, then it’s very hard to separate. I still occasionally watch the opening shot of Manhattan, as it’s breathtaking in its combined area of artistry…but after that, no thanks.
